HOW THE UIL 6A SOFTBALL BRACKET WORKS

The UIL (University Interscholastic League) governs Texas high school athletics and runs the largest high school softball tournament in the country. The 6A classification — the largest in Texas — runs two simultaneous 64-team brackets each spring, with Division 1 (larger enrollment schools) and Division 2 running identical formats.

Every district champion and district runner-up earns a playoff berth, seeded by their district performance and regional ranking. The bracket runs six consecutive rounds over three to four weeks, finishing with the State Semifinal and State Final at a central Texas venue in late May.

Key rule: All playoff series are best-of-3. A team can be eliminated after just 2 games if they drop both games of the series. There's no single-elimination sudden death until a series is decided.

DIVISION 1 vs. DIVISION 2 — WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

UIL splits 6A schools into two divisions based on enrollment size — Division 1 (D1) holds the larger schools, Division 2 (D2) the slightly smaller ones. Both divisions run completely separate brackets from the first round all the way through to a separate state champion.

This means there are two 6A state champions crowned each spring — one from D1 and one from D2. The D1/D2 split was introduced for the 2024–25 season, so 2025 was the first year with two 6A champions. A school's assignment is set by UIL based on enrollment data and stays the same for the two-year reclassification cycle.

On the live bracket page, you can toggle between Division 1 and Division 2 at any time — the "D1 / D2" pill button at the top of each section controls which division you're viewing.

REGIONAL BREAKDOWN

Texas 6A is divided into four regions (I–IV), each sending 16 teams per division to the playoffs. Regions are roughly geographic: Region I covers West Texas and El Paso, Region II covers Central/North Texas, Region III covers the Houston metro, and Region IV covers San Antonio and South Texas.

The four Regional Final winners from each division advance to the State Semifinal, where the bracket collapses to a Final Four format. The two State Semifinal winners meet in the State Final.

What is a "seed" in the UIL bracket?

Each team is seeded by their district finish (district champion = W1, W2, W3, etc. for top seeds in the West bracket; R1, R2, R3, etc. for the Right/East bracket within each region). The higher seed hosts the early rounds, so a W1 seed plays at home for Bi-District and Area. Seeds are designed so that the two best teams in a region can only meet in the Regional Final.
